Campfire

Campfire is a live experience that uses an AI system designed to generate a story in real time for a circle of participants gathered in the dark. Part performance, part experiment, the project blends emerging technology with the ancient tradition of oral storytelling. The technical nitty gritty was an experience where participants are incorporated into the story telling experience, given entirely generative characters and roles in the created story. They have the option to change their character roles through speech alone and at any time in the experience, can raise their hand and ask the narrator questions about the created world and its meaning in the story.

I was the sole creative technologist tasked with building out all the interactive software elements. This means the entire story telling flow for audio playback, background API calls for story generation and text-speech, a LOT of asynchronous functions, and a hand-raise detection system for the AI narrator to call out for questions.
