A Seamless Way to Tour
Brief
With the advent of amazing new machine learning techniques revolutionizing the way we render real world objects, I wanted to explore the potential for combing these emerging technologies with existing tools to combine physical spaces with high fidelity digital ones. In the realm of previsualization and real estate, what if we could fully tour a space without stepping foot in it? What if we translated physical movement into a completely reconstructed digital space?
My Role
I set out to develop a digital product that uses WebAR and real-time Gaussian Splatting/Neural Radiance Fields so that users can move around freely in the scanned space. The challenge here is doing it all in real-time. This requires optimized and efficient models that render on constrained devices like a smart phone. WebAR has progressed far enough to be a viable option that doesn't require an application to run. However, ARKit and other app based development environments expose more capabilities than a simple browser. Ultimately, the choice of using these tools in concert with an application or not and what kind of device is dependent on what best suits the use case, whether it be a new way to conduct virtual tours or document a construction site in progress.
