Interactive Sailboat at San Diego Design Week

An Interactive Visual Collage

Brief

The team at VSSL, a San Diego agency, approached me to help them make their vision of an interactive collage projected onto a sailboat come true. They were tasked with creating an experience for San Diego and Tijuana's joint design week under the theme of "Belonger Pertenecer." And what better way to do that then allow people to live submit artwork made on site, which then would be generatively collaged onto the over 30 foot tall sail of a boat.

My Role

From VSSL's vision, I first designed the look and animation of style of the collage using entirely generative techniques in TouchDesigner. After rounds of design feedback, we settled on a look that everyone was happy with. Then I oversaw the build as a technical consult with regard to projectors to rent given the projection area and site specifications (ambient light and optimal placement in the space). Next, I had to connect the server where user submissions would be directed towards and monitor live publications to place onto the generative sail. Finally, I had to use VSSL's eventual two rented projectors and map them onto the sail day of and stitch the individual mappings together day of to make a seamless texture onto the 30 foot area.
